What is Family Violence?

Family violence is also known as domestic abuse, spousal abuse, battering, domestic violence, dating abuse, and intimate partner violence (IPV). It is a pattern of behavior which involves the abuse of one partner against another in an intimate relationship such as marriage, cohabitation, dating, or within a family.

Family violence can take many forms, including:
– Physical aggression or assault, such as hitting, kicking, biting, shoving, restraining, slapping, throwing objects, physical battery, or threats thereof
– Sexual or emotional abuse
– Controlling or domineering behavior
– Intimidation
– Stalking
– Passive or covert abuse (for example, neglect)
– Economic deprivation

In 1992 the Georgia General Assembly created the Georgia Commission on Family Violence to develop a comprehensive state plan for ending family violence in Georgia. Georgia Therapeutic Services is involved in that plan. Georgia Therapeutic Services has more than twenty years of experience in family violence counseling and is certified by the State of Georgia Commission on Family Violence as an approved Family Violence Intervention Program (FVIP).
